In a recent survey published in the Veterinary Record (Click Here to Read) owners and riders of dressage and eventing horses shared their experiences with equine nutritional supplements.

The dressage riders reported that the most frequent issue they encountered with their competition horses was behaviour management - i.e. their horses were stressed out!  Yet, surprisingly, the most common type of equine supplement they were inclined to buy was not for stress management.  This was due, at least in part, to the lack of research available on calming products.

In response to this disconnect, Selected BioProducts (Herbs for Horses) has created ‘Calm and Collected,’ a calming supplement in paste form (and now liquid and powder) that can be administered prior to stressful events.  The product contains magnesium and B vitamins in the correct balance to restore emotional perspective (now, which of us could not use a little more emotional perspective in our life?!).

Magnesium plays a critical role in managing depression in humans ¹, and supplementation with magnesium reduces undesirable behaviours and lowers the chronic stress hormone ‘cortisol’ in intensively managed animals.² Magnesium is also associated with reduced production of acute stress hormones (catecholamines) and lowers blood pressure³.  When magnesium is combined with B vitamins, there results an improvement in stress management and anxiety-related physiology in chronically stressed people⁴
